Learning how to find a niche market that pays well is sometimes a challenge. You may have certain ideas about the markets you’d like to explore, but they’re not always worth while going after. You need not only a niche market that offers a decent return for your time and effort, but one that will not take a Herculean effort to bust into!This process begins with niche keyword research, and ends with competitive analysis. You can do this type of research manually, and for free! If you’d like to maximize your earnings and drastically reduce the time necessary to do this research as well as shorten the time until you begin earning, there are ways to employ niche marketing software to automate the work. First, let’s examine the free ways to do this type of niche market research.
Since the bedrock of search marketing and pay per click marketing is keyword research, it makes perfect sense to start there. Finding great keywords can actually lead you to great niches to go after. (It can work the other way around, as well) To get the ball rolling, determine which broad market you’d like to take a look at, say “fitness”. Then you plug that keyword into the Google AdWords Keyword External tool, and soon it will return you some 200 possibilities. Look for several things in this list of keywords:
- Is there decent search volume? I like to see at least 1000 searches month, unless it’s a very specific niche keyword, (products model number, things like that) in which case I would consider less that that.
- Are there products to sell? Either something of yours or as an affiliate. Make sure it has a high enough profit/commission to make it worth your time.
- What are the AdWords CPC bids? If there are high bids, it could indicate a high demand for that keyword/product niche. People don’t pay high PPC costs without some decent return.
Then take the possible niche keywords and do a basic Google search for them, only putting them in “quotes”. This will give you a GENERAL idea of the pages that are optimized for this keyword term. Notice I said general, as there are many other factors that go into a true picture of the competition. You could also perform an intitle:your keyword search, and an “inanchor:your keyword search. These two will give you more data to help you make a more informed decision.
You want to get as clear a picture as possible, as mounting a campaign to go after a niche is a good amount of work, and you want to be as sure as you can going in that it will bear fruit.
There are tools that can help with keyword popularity research, and there are two major benefits to using them. Number one is that you can scale your efforts far more easily by getting the work done a lot faster; and two, the competitive analysis part of the niche marketing software can usually do a better job on this part than you can, getting you faster and more efficiently to the point where you start making some money at this, which is what you’re after right?
